Shri Ganesha, the God of learning and the remover of obstacles, is the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. He is considered as the God of auspicious beginnings and bestower of fortune in abundance. Shri Ganesha is also called Vinayak (proficient) or Vighneshwar (God to remove deterrants).
This particular idol is of Shri Ganesha in a sitting posture. Usually when we see a seated idol of Lord Ganesha, he is sitting on a throne or on a lotus flower. The most common sitting posture is known as the Lalitasana. It shows Ganpathi sitting on a throne with his left leg folded and the right leg resting on the ground or vice versa. In some of the idols, He is seen sitting cross legged on a lotus flower and that particular posture denotes that he is meditating. The leg that rests on the ground shows that Shri Ganesha is concerned about the affairs of the world and is there to help devotee and bestow his blessings on the world. The other leg however denotes his semi meditation pose.
