“Sukhmani Sahib” is a sacred composition in Sikhism. It is a set of hymns or prayers found in the Guru Granth Sahib, the central religious scripture of Sikhism. Sukhmani Sahib was written by the fifth Sikh Guru, Guru Arjan Dev Ji. The term “Sukhmani” translates to “Peace Ladder” or “Psalm of Peace.”
The composition consists of 24 sections or Astpadis, each containing eight verses or Pauris. It is intended to bring peace and tranquility to the mind and is often recited or sung by Sikhs as a form of meditation or devotion. Sukhmani Sahib emphasizes the importance of devotion to the divine, the practice of virtue, and the remembrance of God’s name as a means to attain inner peace and spiritual enlightenment. It explores various aspects of life, including the nature of the soul, the challenges and temptations faced by human beings, and the path to liberation or union with the Divine.
